Illustrator Level 1

This fun and creative two-day beginner's Illustrator course will get you up to speed using the world’s leading graphic design software, master the tools, avoiding mistakes and getting it right the first time.

This beginner’s class is also well suited if you have some experience with Illustrator. You’ll get a full update on new features, brush-up on tools and work-flows, and learn how to apply professional working techniques.

Using real world design projects and professional work-flows, you’ll learn to:

  • Master the whole production process from the original idea to finished output files
  • Create compelling logos and illustrations
  • Manage print projects, like posters, folders, ads, and business cards
  • Output files for trouble-free printing, online publishing, and graphic elements for use on web pages or in apps

After this two-day course you'll be able to start, create, edit and complete your own graphic design projects, with predictable high-quality results.

Course Format

This is a classroom based, instructor led course, taking place in Austin, Texas.

  • Remember to bring your own computer (BYOC!)
  • The course is offered on a first come first serve basis, and space is limited!

This is a two-day course, lasting from 9am to 4pm each day. We usually do a 1-hour lunch break at noon, and additional morning and afternoon breaks as needed.

What You Learn

  • Get familiar with the user interface, tools and workspaces, and learn important terms related to graphic design and vector editing tools and techniques
  • Set up and prepare documents for different purposes, like print or screen, working with one or several artboards and layers
  • Get to know about the different types of objects, text, paths, shapes, groups and layers
  • Learn type styling using character and paragraph level settings
  • Use basic geometrical shapes as building blocks to create advanced illustrations
  • Work with colors, tints, and effects
  • Master the pen tool to create and edit sophisticated vector shapes
  • Get familiar with the libraries for brushes, symbols, graphic styles, gradients, patterns, and colors
  • Use Image Trace to convert photos and scans to vector graphics
  • Understand how Illustrator interacts with other Adobe programs and the Creative Cloud


  • Basic knowledge of your laptop/computer and its operating system
  • No previous experience with Illustrator required

What You Need To Bring

This is a BYOC class, so students must bring their own computer (Mac or PC) running the necessary software.

If you don’t own a Creative Cloud license, you can buy a subscription at Adobe.com, or download the free trial version. We will be more than glad to help you with download, installation and set-up instructions ahead of the course.

Also, please remember to bring any extra equipment necessary to make your computer work, like power adaptor, your favorite mouse/pointing device, etc.

We will supply you with all the necessary files to complete lessons and exercises, but feel free to bring some of your own works files, designs or ideas!
